This is a pasture in the California coastal range where the herd has just been fed some hay. It is in the fall, before spring rains will turn the grass green. The cattle need to be fed every day until the grass is strong enough to provide nutrition for the cows and calves. These cows need to have a rich supply of milk for the calf at their side.

The cows will be bred again, while nursing this calf, so that they can produce another calf crop 9 months later.

The cycle repeats itself: rain, grass, milk, cattle.
