These are working cowhorses on a California cattle ranch. The bay horse, front and center, is about to escape as the young cowboy works on untangling his halter. It takes experience to catch the smart ones! It took four more experienced hands to catch this bay, once he learned he could escape.

This photograph was taken on July 12, 2000 at Green Camp. This was a week long cattle drive for Fields Livestock done in the Hamilton Range above San Jose, California. The young cowboy was from Missouri and this was his first time on the drive. All of these horses will be caught and used in the evenin' gather. Just out of camera range is the rest of the crew. The silicon valley lies just west of this rugged area. Very few folks know that the "West" lives on just miles from their "high tech environment". These cattle are gathered and handled in the same manner as the techniques of the early 1900's. Nothing much has changed in the rugged west, when it comes to handling cattle in mountain ranges.
