"Ryan's Return"

Ryan Kiely is a working cowboy from California. He was captured in this photograph returning to camp from gatherin' some stray cattle. This photo was taken July 17, 1999 at Green Camp. This location is in the Hamilton Range of the California coastal mountains above San Jose. The silicon valley lies just west of this rugged area. Very few folks know that the "West" lives on just miles from their "high tech environment".

Ryan was working with a crew from Fields Livestock who were gatherin' the cattle in a week long project. The cows, calves, and yearlings are trailered down to lower elevations and sorted. The calves are weaned and shipped to the central valley to pasture. The cows are pregnancy checked by a veterinarian to make sure they are carrying another calf crop for next season. The yearlings may be sent to feedlots to be put on a ration of grain. After general herd health is checked, the cows are turned out their previous hill ground and the cycle repeats itself.
